Master's Program
The M.Ed. Program is a total of 36 credits, made up in the following way:
- The Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching degree will be awarded by Fitchburg State College.
- This is a four-semester program.
EDUC 7000 Seminar in Action Research: Parts I and II: 3 credits each; Part I is a CORE course; Part II is a curriculum "elective" that must be taken by all candidates (This total of six credits is also part of the Professional Licensure credits for all Professional Licensure candidates.)
In the summer semesters, this Seminar meets every Wednesday for a minimum of 2 ½ hours per session. In the fall and spring semesters, this Seminar meets every other Wednesday for a minimum of 2 ½ hours. On the alternate Wednesday during the fall and the spring, a CORE course will be offered at this Seminar site wherever possible. The end product of this Seminar is a Professional Portfolio which includes a professional resume/biography and a personal philosophy of education (both of which are developed through coursework), the Capstone Project and the work product from each course in the M.Ed. Program.
Each semester of this Seminar is organized around a different theme with readings and assignments related to the themes.
Semester One: Teacher as Reflective Learner Semester Two: Teacher as Change Agent Semester Three: Teacher as Leader Semester Four: Presentation of Capstone Projects The Capstone Project: Credits for this project are contained in the Seminar in Action Research, Part II.
The Capstone Project is begun during the first semester in the Research course. The end product of the Research course is a Literature Review on a carefully selected content/curriculum subject. The Literature Review is then taken back to the Action Research Seminar and, with the advice of the Seminar Leader, a plan of action is determined for implementation of the Literature Review in the candidate's classroom. There are separate requirements for the Capstone Project in each of the four semesters. Seminar Leaders guide candidates through the entire Capstone process.

EDUC 8300 Research in Education EDUC 7000 A Reading Course appropriate for the candidate's teaching level EDUC 7400 Contemporary Issues in Education EDUC 7000 The Psychology of Learning: Inclusion for All Students EDUC 7500 Curriculum Design and Implementation for Multi-Needs Populations EDUC 7000 Action Research, Part I Six Additional Elective Courses (in addition to Seminar in action Research Part II): 3 credits each, for a total of 18 credits; 9 elective credits must be in the area of Curriculum and 9 must be in the area of Teaching.
Electives will not be offered until the second semester of the candidate's program.
Electives vary each semester and will be announced at the mid-point of each semester so that the candidate may plan for the next semester.Action Research, Part II is an elective that must be taken by all candidates starting in their third semester.
Transfer credits are treated as electives. Our Fitchburg State College program advisor will review each candidate's Transfer of Credit Request Form and determine the eligibility of courses based on the regulations set forth by the college and the courses' applicability to the candidate's Plan of Study. Students will be notified by the college of the status of their transfer requests.

- Courses must not be older than six years upon the candidate's completion of the program.
- A total of 12 credits may, upon approval, be transferred. No more than 6 of these credits may be from a college other than Fitchburg.
- The courses must be considered by the program advisor to be appropriate for the candidate's M.Ed. program/ Plan of Study.
- Transfer credits must have been taken before matriculation begins.

The regulations for Educator Licensure and Program Approval (603 CMR 7.00) require all candidates seeking initial or professional licensure as a teacher in Massachusetts to complete a Department-approved educator preparation program. Under the regulations, the Commissioner of Education has the statutory authority to approve an expanded variety of educator preparation programs, whether or not they are degree programs.

The cost of the Program is $275 per credit. Credits may not be transferred into the stand- alone 18-credit license program.
All graduate credit is awarded through our higher education partner, Fitchburg State College.
